A civil wedding is not a small wedding

Civil wedding Geneva, this is not just a formality. It is one of the most solemn and intimate moments in a couple’s life. Whether it is your only ceremony or the first step before a larger celebration, it deserves to be photographed with the same care and attention as any other milestone.

As a Geneva wedding photographer, I have had the privilege of documenting civil weddings at some of the city’s most beautiful town halls. Each one has its own character, its own light, its own emotion.

Jacinthe & Timothée – Mairie des Eaux-Vives, Geneva

Jacinthe and Timothée chose the Mairie des Eaux-Vives for their civil ceremony — a beautiful town hall with warm wooden interiors and golden light that makes every photograph feel timeless.

Only their closest family was present. And that intimacy made the room feel full. When you strip a wedding down to its most essential elements — two people, the people they love most, and a commitment made official — what remains is something extraordinarily powerful.

It was short. It was beautiful. And it was the first step in their wedding adventure: a few weeks later, we gathered again with a much larger crowd for their outdoor ceremony. But this moment, quiet and solemn in that golden room, was where it all truly began.

Clara & Arthur – Mairie de Lancy, Geneva

Clara and Arthur were married at the Mairie de Lancy and I fell in love with that room the moment I walked in. Light, airy, with clean lines and beautiful natural light. As a photographer, it is the kind of space that makes your work sing.

Clara had flown in from London for her civil wedding. She arrived radiant, holding a small bouquet of lily of the valley, it was early May, and everything felt like spring. When it came time to exchange vows, she pulled out several pages of handwritten words. Every line was more moving than the last.

Then it was Arthur’s turn. He reached into his pocket and produced what can only be described as a post-it note. The room erupted in laughter. And somehow, in that single moment, you understood everything about who they were together.

A few weeks later, they celebrated with all their friends. But this, the lily of the valley, the pages of vows, the post-it, this is the story I will never forget.

What makes a civil wedding in Geneva special

Every civil wedding in Geneva has its own story. Geneva’s town halls are not grey administrative spaces. The Mairie des Eaux-Vives, with its warm wooden interiors and historic paintings, feels like stepping into another era. The Mairie de Lancy offers something different — light, modern, and luminous.

Both are beautiful. Both tell a different story. And both deserve to be photographed properly.

What to expect during a civil wedding in Geneva

A civil ceremony in Geneva typically lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. The officiant reads the legal texts, the couple exchanges vows, signs the register, and that is it, you are married. It is simple, elegant, and surprisingly moving.

How many guests can attend?

Civil ceremonies in Geneva are typically intimate, usually between 10 and 30 guests depending on the room. This intimacy is actually one of the most beautiful things about them. Every emotion is visible. Every tear, every smile, every look between the couple.

Do I need a photographer for a civil wedding?

Yes. Absolutely yes. These moments, the signing of the register, the first kiss as a legally married couple, the walk out into the Geneva sunshine, they happen once. A few well-chosen photographs will tell the story of this day for generations.

A Note to Couples Planning Their Civil Wedding in Geneva

Whether your civil wedding is your only celebration or the quiet prelude to a larger party, it is a real wedding. It counts. It matters. And it deserves to be remembered. Civil wedding Geneva photographers are not all the same, look for someone who understands intimacy and discretion.

I would love to be there with you.
